누군가와 무엇을 얘기해보겠다고 할 때 내가 생각해낼 수 있는 표현은 discuss, bring up 정도인데, "take up with"도 쓸 수 있다는 걸 알게 되었다. 원어민들은 쉽게 떠올릴 수 있는 표현이겠지만, 외국인 입장에선 이렇게 흔한 take라는 동사를 구체적인 상황에서 떠올리기가 쉽지 않다.

 

bring up은 단순히 '언급하다'라는 의미이지만, take up with는 약간 부정적인 것 혹은 이슈 사항을 얘기할 때로 상황이 특정된다는 것을 알 수 있다. (저 이메일에서도 AAA에 대하여 XX 회사에서 승인이 늦어져서 사과를 함과 동시에 미팅에서 그 내용을 언급하겠다고 했으니, take up with를 쓰기 적절한 상황인 것이다.)

 

또한 take up with는 목적어 없이도 사용이 가능한데, 그때는 '(누군가와) 어울리다'라는 뜻이며, 이것 역시도 약간 부정적인, 믿음직스럽지 못한 사람들과 어울릴 때 쓴다고 한다.

 

He was a great student until he took up with a group of troublemakers and ended up getting expelled.
Sarah has taken up with a much older man, and it makes me really uncomfortable.
