"tally" 파헤치기 (영단어 어원 & 용례 찾는 방법)

요즘 회사 도서관에 TIME 잡지가 있다는 걸 발견한 뒤로 일주일에 기사 2개 정도 읽고 있다.

코로나바이러스에 관한 글을 읽는 도중, 예전에 접했지만 기억이 잘 안나는 단어를 마주하게 되었다.

"Death also rose - the US recorded its first coronavirus-related mortalities - and health officials warned that the disease has "pandemic potential." There are now more than 80,000 cases of COVID-19 infection in mainland China and nearly 13,000 outside the country, with the latter tally growing daily."

 

TALLY? 나의 어렴풋한 기억에서 number 정도로 외웠던 단어인데.. 그때 이걸 외우면서도 참 귀여운 단어구나 라는 생각 정도 하고 넘어갔다. 왜 number, statistics 등의 단어가 있는데 굳이 tally라는 단어가 존재하게 되었을까. 오랜만에 마주친 김에 분석을 해줘야겠다.

 

가장 단순하게 영단어를 공부하는 방법은 그냥 영한사전을 찾아보는 것이다. 여기까지는 기본 중의 기본이다.

즉, 단순한 기록이 아닌, 어떠한 현상이 진전되면서 바뀌는 수치를 기록하는 것을 tally라고 한다. 코로나바이러스 확산에 따른 확진자/사망자의 수를 기록하는 것이니 tally라고 표현한 것이다.

 

뭐든 배경을 알고 있어야 기억에 오래 남는법. 이젠 어원을 파헤치러 가 본다.

'막대기'란 뜻의 라틴어 "talea"에서 유래했다. 막대기를 가지고 수치를 측정하거나 비교하는 관습에서 유래하였다. 더욱 외우기 쉬운 것은 바로 "tailor" (재단사)도 같은 어원에서 유래했다는 것. 막대기를 가지고 재단해서 옷을 맞추는 행위를 상상할 수 있다. 1856년에 들어서야 스포츠에서의 "기록"으로 의미가 구체화되었다. 물론 스포츠가 아닌 일반 통계에서도 쓰이기 때문에 TIME지에서 "tally"란 표현이 나왔다.

 

그럼 이젠 훨씬 더 많은 예문과 Collocations (같이 쓰이는 전치사, 동사, 부사, 명사 등)를 알아보러 가자.

 

COCA라는 사이트를 이전 글에서 소개했는데, 아래와 같이 word를 클릭한 뒤 단어를 검색하면 해당 단어에 대한 총체적인 정리를 해 준다. (이건 나도 오늘 처음 발견함!!)

 

아래 왼쪽을 보면 NEWS, MAG(잡지)에서 많이 쓰이지만, SPOK(구두)의 빈도는 상대적으로 낮다. 즉 "tally"라는 표현을 듣거나 말할 일은 잘 없다는 뜻.

바로 밑의 YouGlish와 Yarn을 클릭하면 실제로 이 표현이 나오는 유투브 영상이나 짤막한 클립을 볼 수 있다. 원래 알고 있는 사이트였는데 COCA랑 연동될줄은 몰랐네 ㅋㅋㅋ

그리고 오른쪽에는 tally가 쓰인 글/영상이 보통 어떤 주제인지, 같이 쓰이는 연어(collocate)가 나온다.

 

제일 유용한 건 아래 수많은 예문들. tally를 중심으로 앞뒤로 어떤 표현이 자주 쓰이는지 색깔별로 나와 있어서, 사전보다 훨씬 생생하고 유용하고 다양한 예문을 접할 수 있다. 이걸 한 30개쯤 읽고 나면 tally를 나중에 발견해도 아리까리하지 않고 명확하게 넘어갈 수 있지 않을까?
